Pictorial Images Becoming Abstraction

Hello there and welcome to my website....thank you for visiting!

2019 has seen the development of more abstract imagery within my work. Initial brushstrokes are not tampered with or tweaked, allowing the painting to hang in a balance between its original intent (its‘ first marks) and my conscious input (my conscious painting around those first marks and brushstrokes).

What is becoming apparent to me is that the initial first marks and shapes on my canvas have a mysterious and almost mystical quality. This is by no means conscious on my part. I am in an almost trance like state when I first put brush to canvas using my left hand (I am right handed) and allowing my arm and hand movements to be free to go where they choose. I try to allow those first marks to remain in place, the bones of each painting if you like.

Images are reminiscent of ancient landscapes. My own travel to the Greek islands recently perhaps imbuing them with a sense of mythology and spirituality which I experience each time I visit.
